Evolution Dental Care, your trusted clinic in Hamilton, NSW, is dedicated to Orofacial Myofunctional Therapy (OMT) and comprehensive dental care. At Evolution Dental Care, we specialise in OMT, which involves the neuromuscular re-education of oral and facial muscles to enhance function and tone. Correcting these muscles' functions is crucial for improving breathing, speaking, chewing, swallowing, and overall health.
Our OMT services address a wide range of conditions, including:
Each treatment plan is tailored to the individual patient, ensuring personalised care and effective results.
Evolution Dental Care team is led by Dr. Dayna Fairweather, our senior dentist, and Coralie Rush, our Dental Hygienist/Oral Facial Myologist. Both Dr Fairweather and Coralie Rush have extensive training in Orofacial Myology, orthopaedic orthodontics, breathing and sleep dysfunctions, and orofacial pain. They are passionate about improving children's dental and orofacial health through early diagnostics and integrative treatment approaches involving ENT surgeons, respiratory physicians, dental professionals, speech pathologists, and occupational therapists.
We understand that each patient is unique, which is why we customise every treatment plan. Orofacial myology treatments include targeted exercises that strengthen facial muscles, enhancing functions such as chewing, swallowing, breathing, and posture. Our approach may also include advanced techniques like Palate Expansion, designed not only for orthodontic correction but also to restore nasal breathing and improve overall airway health.
Evolution Dental Care offers specialised orthodontic interventions like Hyrax Expander – Slow Maxillary Expansion (SME), Farrell Bent Wire System (BWS), and Maxillary Skeletal Expansion (MSE). These methods are tailored to promote arch development, correct facial dysfunction, and support optimal growth and development in both children and adults. MSE, for instance, is effective for patients with sleep-disordered breathing, aligning teeth and improving bite alignment after the expansion phase.
It uses lighter forces for a longer period of time to expand the maxillary arch. It is primarily planned to produce dentoalveolar expansion or changes. Slow expansion has been found to promote greater post-expansion stability, if given an adequate retention period. It delivers a constant physiologic force until the required expansion is obtained.
An ingenious alternative to traditional expander, the Hyrax is a telescoping metal expander that does away with wire keys used to activate the appliance and replaces it with a small hex wrench, making it more user friendly.
The design features of the BWS are suited to provide effective arch development when combined with the Myobrace® appliances in the mixed and permanent dentition. This appliance is allowing the facial dysfunction to be treated at the same time the arch is developing. This is an adjusted by a dental practitioner monthly, ideally trying to achieve 1mm of growth a month.
At Evolution Dental Care, we believe in a multi-disciplinary approach to care for our patients. We work together with ENT’s, chiropractors, osteopaths, speech pathologists and many more to provide holistic care. As a health professional, we love to work together with other allied health streams to get the best outcomes for our patients.
An MSE is an orthodontic expander, supported by teeth and bone. Orthodontic bands are secured onto the upper first molar teeth, and 4 mini implants are placed in the palate under local anaesthetic to secure the device to the bone.
The expander is actively expanded for 1-3 months, then left for a further 6 months to allow bony remodelling. The MSE is not used alone, but in conjunction with other orthodontic methods, such as clear aligners, after the expansion phase to align the teeth and bite.
